Barbara Allen

Visiting Senior Lecturer

Barbara Allen is the Director of the Centre for Mathematics Education (CME). She is also the Director of the Open University Primary Mathematics Specialist Teacher Programme (MaST).

Her background is in middle school teaching where she developed a concern about the under achievement of girls.

Her current research interests include pupils' perceptions of their lives in mathematics classrooms and the professional development of mathematics teachers.

She has written on a variety of courses at the Open University including Passport to Mathematics and Breakthrough to Mathematics, Science and Technology. More recently she developed the materials for the MaST programme.

Barbara is a member of the Outer Circle of the Advisory Committee for Mathematics Education (ACME).

She is the co-author of a series of children’s science adventure stories called The Spark Files. Barbara is the creator and author of The Mudds, a science series of 21 radio programmes for CBeebies which in 2009 won Silver Medal in the New York Festivals Radio Programming and Promotion Awards.
