Robin James Wilson

Emeritus Professor

I was at the Open University from 1972 to 2009, as lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Professor of Pure Mathematics. I am now an Emeritus Professor. I was Head of the Pure Mathematics Departmenr, and also Dean of the Faculty for a short while.

I was involved with many pure mathematics courses -- M202, M231, M332, M203, TM361, M823, M829, M337, M338, and taught 70 weeks of summer schools.

I have a first-class Open University degree in Humanities with Music.

Before going to the OU I taught at jesus College, Oxford, and have since had part-time teaching positions at four other Oxford colleges, including Keble College (29 years) and ,recently, Pembroke College.

My research interests lie in two areas:

  • Graph Theory and Combinatorics
  • History of Mathematics

In Graph Theory my main interests are in colouring problems – especially in edge–colourings of graphs and the four–colour problem. In the history of mathematics, I am interested in British mathematics – especially the 17th century and the period 1860 – 1940 and in the history of graph theory and combinatorics.
