Death of Mike Simpson

Thursday, Nov 27th 2014

We are sorry to report the death of Mike Simpson, the Mathematics Staff Tutor based in London. Mike has worked for the OU for over 42 years. Besides managing a large number of ALs in London, he has been one of our most influential, prolific and successful course authors ever, producing materials at all undergraduate levels, most importantly at Level 1 where he has helped shape all our offerings since the late 1970s, right up to our recently launched flagship course MST124. He has given valuable service in many other roles, for instance Head of the old Applied Mathematics Department, Sub-Dean of the old Mathematics and Computing Faculty, member of Senate and the University's Residential School Committee – he was a stalwart of maths residential schools, organising them overall and then directing and teaching for 2 or more weeks a year until he became ill last year. His passion for the OU and its students and tutors, for mathematics and the highest quality of teaching and the student experience was undimmed right to the end. He has made outstanding contributions to our teaching that have reached hundreds of thousands of students. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Joelle and their children and offer thanks to Mike for all he did for the OU.
