Abstract: This talk will have two parts – the first part on spectral theory, the second on mathematics in Kenya. The abstract for the first part follows.

A lot of results in spectral theory of differential operators have led to some results in spectral theory of the difference operators. Generally, most researchers have been extending the spectral results of differential operators to difference operators. Does it mean that under similar decay and regularity conditions the spectral properties of the two operators will be the same? This is not true in general even from the construction of the two operators. Therefore, we give a comparative analysis of the spectra of the two operators under similar decay and regularity conditions.
